A romance by Richard Doddridge Blackmore, one of the most famous English novelists of the nineteenth century. Originally published in 1869 in a limited edition of five hundred copies in three volumes, it received critical success upon the publication of the first uniform edition in one volume the following year.

The plot is based on a group of historical characters in a late seventeenth century Devon and Somerset.

This copy is a Dulverton edition illustrated with coloured plates, landscapes, and figure subjects by Charles E Brittan and Charles E Brock.

This edition has some slight fading and discolouration to page ends due to age, however, text and illustrations are bright and clean, and still very beautiful.
